Quick Tip: Cannot Import – Specified file is not a registry script


If you’re trying to run a registry script (i.e. file with .reg extension) and receives the following error:

Then here’s what you need to do:

  • Edit the file and ensure you have the following on the first line of the .reg file (for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 7 registry):
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
  • When saving the file ensure you do the following:
    • Change file extension to .reg
    • For File Type select All Files (.*)
    • For Encoding, select ANSI
